KARACHI: The alarming rise in traffic accidents across Traffic Crisis Karachi has resulted in 108 fatalities in 2025, with 72 deaths recorded in urban areas and 24 in suburban regions. A notable increase in dumper truck-related crashes has further exacerbated the crisis, raising concerns about road Traffic Crisis safety.
Shocking Mai Kolachi Multi-Vehicle Crash Traffic Crisis
A major accident near Mai Kolachi involved a freight train colliding with a trailer, followed by an oil tanker crashing into both vehicles. According to police reports, the front portion of the oil tanker was crushed, trapping the driver inside. Rescue teams swiftly arrived at the scene, successfully extricating the trapped driver after intensive efforts.
Authorities, including police, Rangers, and emergency response teams, managed the situation as oil transfer operations from the damaged tanker commenced. Officials confirmed the absence of a railway crossing at the site of the collision, highlighting a significant safety oversight.
Traffic Disruptions Across Karachi Traffic Crisis
The crash led to severe traffic congestion along Mai Kolachi Road. While authorities have reopened the route from Boat Basin to Jinnah Bridge, the section from Mai Kolachi to Boat Basin remains closed.
Traffic diversions have been put in place:
- Vehicles on MT Khan Road are being rerouted to PIDC.
- Commuters from Boat Basin are redirected towards Bilawal Chowrangi.
Efforts are still underway to clear the freight train, trailer, and oil tanker from the accident site to restore normal traffic flow.
Another Fatal Accident in Malir’s Memon Goth Traffic Crisis
In a separate tragic incident, a fatal accident in Malir’s Memon Goth resulted in one death. Initially, rescue officials suspected a dumper truck’s involvement; however, subsequent investigations found no evidence of its presence. The identity of the deceased remains unknown.
Government’s Response to Rising Traffic Accidents
Sindh’s Senior Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, addressed the media regarding the government’s response to the alarming increase in road accidents. Following a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, several key decisions were announced to improve road safety:
Mandatory Fitness and Registration of Heavy Vehicles
- All heavy traffic vehicles must now undergo compulsory fitness tests and registration.
- Vehicles lacking valid fitness certificates will be prohibited from operating on Karachi’s roads.
- A 30-day grace period has been granted for compliance.
Barcode System for Water Tankers
- The Karachi Water Board has introduced a barcode system for registered water tankers.
- Only water tankers meeting safety standards will be issued barcodes; unregistered vehicles will be seized.
- Previously registered vehicles will be re-evaluated to ensure compliance.
Revised Operational Hours for Dumper Trucks
- The operational hours for dumper trucks have been revised to reduce congestion and enhance public safety.
- Previously allowed from 11 PM to 6 PM, dumper trucks can operate only from 10 PM to 6 AM.
Who is Responsible?
Speaking on Geo Pakistan, Sharjeel Memon emphasized that road accidents cannot be attributed to a single entity. He stressed that responsibility lies with multiple stakeholders, including the government, reckless drivers, and those who violate traffic laws.
Memon also stated that vehicle fitness regulations are not new and that the government plans to outsource the transport department to enhance efficiency and compliance.
