Pakistan’s power generation reached 7,800 GWh (10,484 MW) in December 2024, marking a 1% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to 7,726 GWh in December 2023. This slight growth reflects an uptick in economic activity. However, it remained 2% lower than the reference generation for the month, Sustainable Energy according to Arif Habib Limited (AHL).
On a monthly basis, electricity generation declined by 3%, down from 8,032 GWh in November 2024. Meanwhile, in the first half of FY25 (July-December), overall power generation declined by 3% YoY to 66,641 GWh, compared to 68,982 GWh in the same period last year.

Electricity Cost Declines by 10%
One positive development is the 10% decrease in electricity generation costs, with the per-unit cost dropping to Rs9.09 KWh in December 2024, compared to Rs10.13 KWh in December 2023. AHL noted that this cost reduction is below the reference cost, primarily due to increased electricity generation from nuclear and hydel sources, which are more affordable.
Pakistan’s Power Generation Mix – December 2024
Nuclear Energy Leads the Way
Nuclear power emerged as the dominant source of electricity, contributing 2,065 GWh and accounting for 26.5% of Pakistan’s power generation mix.
Hydel Power on the Rise
Hydel energy followed closely, contributing 22.8% to the total power generation.
RLNG Continues to Play a Major Role
Re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) accounted for 20.7% of the electricity generation share in December 2024.
Renewable Energy Gains Momentum
Pakistan’s renewable energy sector saw notable growth:
- Wind Power witnessed a massive increase, making up 3.4% of the total power generation mix in December 2024, compared to 1.9% in December 2023.
- Solar Power contributed 1%.
- Bagasse (biomass energy) accounted for 1.3%.
